Eglise du Sacré-Coeur, Marseille

Eglise du Sacré-Coeur, Marseille

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart (Basilique du Sacré-Cœur) stands as a minor basilica within the Roman Catholic Church, venerating the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ. Situated along the avenue du Prado, in the Rouet district of Marseille, this splendid basilica holds deep significance and devotion. The ambitious project began in 1920, with the first stone laid, but fate had other plans. The architect behind the vision, Théophile Dupoux, tragically passed away in 1924, leaving the responsibility to his son to carry on the work.

The basilica stands as an impressive amalgamation of neo-Gothic and Romano-Byzantine influences. Its grand consecration took place in May 1947, and to commemorate its fiftieth anniversary, Pope John Paul II designated it as a minor basilica.

The edifice soars 27 meters into the sky, constructed with local freestone and encompassing a vast crypt that occupies a quarter of its surface. Although the original plan included a central bell tower topped with a spire reaching 62 meters, financial constraints led to its omission.

Upon entering the basilica, visitors are greeted by magnificent granite columns sourced from Corsica and Sweden, supporting the graceful vaulted ceiling. The interior is adorned with meticulously crafted stained glass windows, the masterpieces of Parisian workshops, based on designs by Henri Pinta, a native of Marseille. These windows artfully depict the history of the Sacred Heart. Mosaics also embellish the walls, adding to the visual splendor of the building. Additionally, the sculptor Louis Botinelly's Pietà graces the interior with its poignant presence.

Marseille’s Old Town, known as Le Panier—which means “the Basket” in French—is the historic heart of the city and one of the oldest urban settlements in France. Its name likely derives from an old inn called “The Inn of the Basket,” which existed in the 17th century, though the district itself traces its origins back more than 2,600 years.
