Eglise Saint Charles, Marseille

Eglise Saint Charles, Marseille

The Saint Charles Church (Eglise Saint Charles) can be found in Marseille's 1st arrondissement, situated at the intersection of Breteuil Street and Grignan Street. Dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, this impressive church was constructed between 1827 and 1828 through contributions from the faithful, municipal subsidies, and a loan. On November 4, 1828, it was solemnly consecrated under the patronage of Saint Charles Borromeo by Monseigneur de Mazenod, who served as the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Marseilles.

Initially thriving for a century and a half, the church's popularity waned in the 1990s, leading to its near-desertion. However, in 2007, the Archbishop of Marseille decided to dedicate the church to the celebration of the Roman rite in its extraordinary form, also known as the Saint Pius V mass. Since 2009, it has been served by the Missionaries of Divine Mercy.

Architecturally, the church, skillfully constructed by contractors Mouren and Guieu, stands as a remarkable example of French classicism. Its layout follows a balanced Greek cross design, with a shallow sanctuary featuring a central cupola. The facade showcases Ionic columns below and, above them, Corinthian pilasters along with a triangular pediment, reminiscent of the Carthusian church design. The church's bell tower, housing three bells, discreetly resides in a private courtyard.

Upon entering, the central nave leads to various sections, including altars dedicated to Saint Joseph, Saint Charles-Borromée, the Sacred Heart, and Our Lady of the Sick. The interior boasts elegant frescoes, including coats of arms representing popes and bishops from the 19th century.

In about 620 BC a Greek Phoenician galley rowed into a small outlet called Lacydon Creek, looking for trade. They found it. Ligurians occupied the land, and being sort of Greek themselves, they didn't mind doing business.

The leader of the galley people was one called Protis. Protis was...  view more
