Eglise Saint-Antoine (Church of Saint Anthony), Versailles

Eglise Saint-Antoine (Church of Saint Anthony), Versailles

The Church of Saint Anthony stands out as a neo-Gothic landmark built at the turn of the 20th century. As the population in Le Chesnay surged towards the end of the 1800s, the existing parish church - Saint-Germain - became too small for the community. To address this, plans for a new and more spacious place of worship were approved, and construction of Saint-Antoine began in 1897.

Designed by the architect Leyendecker, the church was inaugurated and blessed in 1900, although work continued for several years after. The tower was completed in 1903, all stained glass windows were fitted by 1906, and the portal’s sculpted tympanum and bells were added by 1910.

Inside, the church is distinguished by its beautiful stained glass windows, many by the Lorin workshop in Chartres, which depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony. Also notable are the organs built by the Cavaillé-Coll school in 1913, lending both historical and acoustic richness to the space.
