Eldon House, London (must see)
Eldon House is one of the oldest surviving residences in the region, completed in 1834 for John Harris, a Royal Navy officer and Treasurer of the London District. The house remained in the Harris family for about 125 years, passing through four generations before it was donated to the city around 1959–1960. This long period of continuous ownership helps explain why the building and its contents have been preserved with a high level of authenticity, offering insight into daily life during the 19th century.
The design reflects both Georgian and Regency influences, seen in its balanced structure and restrained exterior details. Inside, the arrangement includes formal rooms such as a drawing room and dining room, along with service areas that supported household work. Much of the furniture, artwork, and personal items belonged directly to the Harris family. Letters, photographs, and decorative objects remain in place, allowing visitors to understand how the home evolved across different generations.
The house originally stood on an estate of about 4.5 hectares, where the grounds were used for both practical needs and leisure. Today, the remaining gardens and nearby parkland still reflect this mixed use. Paths, open lawns, and planted areas give a sense of how the outdoor space was organized and how it connected to the house.
Now operating as a museum, the site offers guided tours that focus on the Harris family and the wider development of the surrounding area. The preserved interiors and original collection provide a direct connection to the colonial and Victorian periods, showing changes in social habits, household routines, and local growth over time.
