Saint Paul's Cathedral, London (must see)
Saint Paul’s Cathedral is an Anglican church with origins dating back to 1834, when the first parish was established in a growing colonial settlement. The current building was completed in 1846 and later expanded as the congregation increased. It has remained an active place of worship for nearly two centuries, reflecting both religious continuity and changes in the surrounding community over time.
The structure follows Gothic Revival design, with pointed arches, tall windows, and a strong vertical form. Its stone exterior and square tower define the entrance. Inside, a central nave, side aisles, and chancel are arranged for clear sound and visibility, with wooden pews and a vaulted ceiling shaping the space.
Stained glass windows are an important feature, many installed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These depict biblical scenes as well as memorials connected to the parish. A pipe organ built by Casavant Frères supports services and concerts. The cathedral also maintains strong historical links with the military. It houses the “Military Colours” of former local regiments, placed in the transepts as a form of remembrance and respect for those who served.
Alongside its regular services, the cathedral hosts a range of community and seasonal events. One of the most distinctive is the annual Blessing of the Animals, when visitors bring pets such as dogs, cats, and small animals into the sanctuary for a formal service recognizing the relationship between people and animals. Concerts, lectures, and outreach programs also take place throughout the year, showing how the building continues to function as both a historic site and an active gathering space.
