Eleftherios Venizelos Museum of Chalepa, Chania

Eleftherios Venizelos Museum of Chalepa, Chania

Eleftherios Venizelos Museum of Chalepa occupies the paternal residence of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of Greece’s most influential statesmen. Venizelos lived here from 1880 to 1910 and returned periodically until 1935. The Greek state assumed ownership in 2002 and entrusted the property to the Eleftherios K. Venizelos Foundation, transforming it into a house museum that retains its authenticity.

This is not a typical exhibit space-it’s a documentary home where original furnishings, personal items, and period decor remain largely intact. The ground floor and parts of the first floor preserve the layout as it was left by the Venizelos family. Every room offers a tangible connection to his life, from everyday objects to significant moments, such as where he lived, worked, raised his children, and mourned his wife.

Spread across three floors with eighteen rooms, the museum provides a rich, immersive journey into Venizelos’s personal and political world. Visitors can also use a free multilingual app to scan QR codes and unlock detailed historical insights.
