Elnathan Nye House, Falmouth

Elnathan Nye House, Falmouth

The Elnathan Nye House, located on Old Main Road in North Falmouth, is a well-preserved example of 18th-century Georgian Colonial architecture. Constructed circa 1735, the home was expanded in 1772 to its current five-bay facade, showcasing the architectural evolution of early American homes.

Inside, the house retains many of its original features, including three beehive ovens, plaster-and-lath walls, period wood paneling, and a large kitchen fireplace in the keeping room. The original wide-plank flooring and multiple fireplaces further contribute to its historic character. The barn on the property, which may also date to the 18th century, houses original tools from the period, offering insight into the daily life of its early occupants.

Built by Elnathan Nye, a notable local figure, the house has witnessed centuries of changing tastes, needs, and technologies, yet continues to stand as one of Falmouth’s oldest dwellings. Situated on approximately two acres of wooded land, the property contributes to the historic district of North Falmouth and reflects the architectural and cultural heritage of the region.

Recognizing its historical and architectural significance, the Elnathan Nye House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
