Equestrian Statue of Louis XIV, Versailles

The Equestrian Statue of Louis XIV stands in the broad forecourt leading to the royal palace. Raised on a tall stone pedestal, the bronze monument shows the king holding a command baton while controlling a powerful horse. Its green patina contrasts with the pale paving and palace façade, while its position on the central axis connects the ruler visually with his former residence.

Created in 1836-1837 and installed in 1837, the monument was commissioned by King Louis-Philippe during the transformation of the palace into a museum of French history. Pierre Cartellier created the horse for an earlier monument, while Louis-Messidor Petitot later added Louis XIV. Charles Crozatier cast the group in bronze. The sculpture measures about 5.5 metres high and 4.5 metres long.

The statue originally stood closer to the palace entrance. It was removed in 2006 during the reconstruction of the Royal Gate and returned in 2009 after a two-year restoration. The restoration repaired the structure, cleaned the bronze and replaced missing details. Visitors can study the horse, the king’s clothing and the statue’s alignment with the palace.
