Erloserkirche (Church of the Redeemer), Heidelberg

Erloserkirche (Church of the Redeemer), Heidelberg

This small church is easily overlooked where it stands, and few people know that it is the old Catholic parish church-referred to by some longtime Heidelberg residents as the "English Chapel". Its outer walls belong to the White Nuns' Monastery (Dominican Sisters), which was completed in 1724 in a city rebuilt after the Wars of the Orleans Succession. The monastery lasted for 78 years until it was dissolved in 1802 during secularization.

The "English period" began in the mid-19th century when the English community in Heidelberg sought a church space. The city administration granted their request, and after extensive renovations, the former monastery church became the "English Chapel". This period ended in 1914 when Germany and England became war opponents, leading to the church's closure and subsequent use as school space.

In 1936, the Old Catholic community was granted this building as their parish church. They moved out of the Holy Spirit Choir Church, bringing with them an inventory of items from various monasteries, including an altar with a crucifix, an organ front, and pews. The English Chapel then became the Old Catholic Church of the Redeemer. Two major renovations have transformed the interior, with the most notable change being the stained glass windows designed by Harry McLean in 1962.

To conclude, the history of this church building is denominationally diverse, and it continues to reflect this diversity. Since 1971, an "English community" has been holding Sunday services here again, and Greek Orthodox believers gather once a month for their celebrations.
