Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hague

Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hague

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in The Hague is a remarkable example of historical architecture and religious heritage. It was constructed between 1759 and 1761, with the renowned architect Pieter de Swart at the helm, known for his work on notable buildings like the Palace on Lange Voorhout and the Koninklijke Schouwburg.

The decision to build a larger church was made by the Lutheran congregation in 1751, replacing an older church that had been in existence since 1615. De Swart collaborated with Amsterdam architect Coenraet Hoeneker, who contributed to the interior design. The church was officially consecrated on December 13, 1761, upon its completion.

Architecturally, the church is a single-aisle building with a classicist-style brick facade, characteristic of The Hague. The front door is positioned centrally and is flanked by shuttered windows, while the facade features three tall arched windows. An interesting architectural detail is the presence of 'swans' as wind vanes on the roof, a distinctive feature in Lutheran churches.

Internally, the church boasts a complex support structure of posts and struts, with a draw beam spanning 17.80 meters. The interior is characterized by white plaster walls and Ionic pilasters, representing the Dutch Louis XV style. The liturgical center takes a central position, in line with Lutheran tradition, and features brass gates depicting the story of Jonah and the whale.

The church boasts the renowned Bätz organ, crafted by Johann Heinrich Hartmann Bätz in 1762 and restored in 2007. This exceptional instrument is a national monument, regularly used in religious services, concerts, and for teaching organ students from around the world. Distinguished musicians like Feike Asma, Willem Mudde, Marie Claire Alain, and more have performed on it. Its versatility spans classical to modern music, consistently captivating and inspiring audiences.

Today, the Lutheran Church in The Hague serves not only as a place of worship but also as a venue for regular concerts, with a special focus on showcasing the renowned Bätz organ. In doing so, it continues to uphold its legacy as both a cultural and religious landmark.
