Evangelische Kreuzkirche Bonn (The Church of the Cross), Bonn
The Church of the Cross is the city's principal Protestant church. First consecrated in 1871, it quickly became a central place of worship for Bonn's Evangelical community, embodying the religious revival in the Rhineland following Prussian annexation.
Built in the neo-Gothic style by architect August Dieckhoff, the church accommodates up to 1,200 worshippers, making it the largest Protestant church in the region. Its tall brick tower and elegant pointed-arch windows echo medieval Gothic architecture, while interior features such as slender pillars and ribbed vaults reflect the enduring influence of the original design, even after significant post-war reconstruction.
Heavily damaged during World War II, the church was rebuilt between 1951 and 1954 under architect Heinrich Otto Vogel. Vogel’s innovative design blended modern structural techniques-like folded-plate vaults on slender concrete columns-with the original neo-Gothic aesthetic, creating an interior that is both spacious and refined.
Today, the church regularly hosts concerts ranging from organ recitals to performances by the Beethoven Orchestra and New York Gospel Stars, especially during events such as the Beethoven Festival. During the festival, the square before the church transforms into a lively festival centre with social events and artist interactions.
