University of Bonn, Bonn

University of Bonn, Bonn

The University of Bonn was founded in 1818 by King Frederick William III of Prussia as the successor to the earlier academies in Bonn. Housed in the former Electoral Palace, today it stands as one of Germany's eleven Universities of Excellence, celebrated for its strong research and teaching legacy.

The main building's grand Baroque façade spans three stories, featuring rusticated lower levels, alternating segmental and triangular window crowns, and four corner towers. Fronting the palace is the expansive Court Garden, a tree-lined public park originally planted in 1760.

Notable exterior highlights include the Koblenz Gate-a richly decorated late-Baroque triumphal arch topped with a gilded statue of Saint Michael-and the gracious blend of Italian and French-influenced design. A particularly pleasant stop within the campus is the Botanical Garden of the University, home to around 8,000 species.
