Extreme Park, Louisville

Extreme Park, Louisville

The David Armstrong Extreme Park, formerly known as the Louisville Extreme Park, is a premier public skatepark located in the Butchertown neighborhood near downtown Louisville. Opened in 2002 and spanning 40,000 square feet, the park was developed with community input and has since become a nationally recognized destination for skaters, BMX riders, and in-line skaters. It gained widespread attention after being featured in Tony Hawk’s Gigantic Skatepark Tour, putting it on the map for enthusiasts across the country.

The park is known for its impressive range of features that cater to all skill levels, including a massive 24-foot full pipe-one of the few of its kind in the U.S.-as well as multiple bowls of varying depths, fun boxes, rails, ledges, a street course, and a 12-foot wooden vert ramp with a 13-foot extension. The design offers a seamless blend of street, transition, and vert elements, allowing skaters to explore endless lines and combinations. On-site restrooms and emergency telephones make it a functional, user-friendly space.

In 2014, a portion of the park was temporarily demolished to accommodate the new Abraham Lincoln Bridge. The redesigned facilities were completed in 2015 and the park was renamed in honor of former Louisville Mayor David L. Armstrong. Although the park was originally open 24/7, a 2023 policy introduced an 11 PM nightly curfew in response to rising safety concerns, with new cameras installed to assist monitoring.

Centrally located and easily accessible by car, bus, or the RiverWalk trail system, the Extreme Park remains a vibrant hub for the local skating community and visiting thrill-seekers alike.
