Fanshawe Pioneer Village, London
Fanshawe Pioneer Village is an open-air museum that presents daily life from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was established in 1959, when local historians worked to preserve buildings threatened by the creation of a nearby reservoir. The site now includes more than 30 historic structures relocated from across the region, each restored to reflect its original function and period.
The village is arranged into sections representing different decades, from the 1820s to the 1920s. Visitors can explore farmhouses, a general store, a school, a church, and small workshops. Interiors are furnished with period objects, showing how people lived and worked. Interpreters in historical clothing often demonstrate activities such as blacksmithing, baking, and weaving, helping explain everyday routines and skills.
Outdoor space connects the buildings through paths, fences, and open fields, reflecting how rural communities were organized. Seasonal changes shape the experience, with gardens, crops, and activities varying throughout the year. Special programs, including harvest events and holiday celebrations, present traditions and community life in a practical, easy-to-follow way.
