New St. James Presbyterian Church, London
New St. James Presbyterian Church is a historic congregation founded in 1833, making it one of the earlier Presbyterian communities in the region. Its current name dates from 1899, when the congregation moved from its earlier “Pepper Box Church” to a new building, reflecting growth and a larger membership.
The present building, completed in 1899, reflects Gothic Revival design, a style widely used for Protestant churches at the time. Its exterior is built mainly of brick, with stone details around entrances and windows. Pointed arch openings and strong vertical lines define the structure, while a tower above the entrance provides a clear focal point. These elements show how traditional European forms were adapted using local materials and construction methods at the end of the 19th century.
Inside, the sanctuary is arranged to support clear visibility and sound, with seating directed toward the pulpit. Wooden pews and interior trim shape a simple interior, while stained glass windows filter light and depict biblical scenes. A Casavant pipe organ remains a key feature. The church also hosts community programs, music activities, and seasonal events.
