Federal Territory Mosque, Kuala Lumpur
The Federal Territory Mosque, located in Kuala Lumpur, stands as a significant architectural and cultural landmark. Constructed between 1998 and 2000, it is strategically positioned near the MATRADE complex and the Federal Government Complex in the Segambut district, just off Jalan Duta.
Covering a sprawling five-hectare site adjacent to the Government Office Complex along Jalan Duta, the mosque was officially opened to the public on 25 October 2000. It is the 44th mosque constructed by the Government within the city's boundaries, demonstrating the continuous effort to provide places of worship in the rapidly growing city.
Designed to accommodate a large congregation, the Federal Territory Mosque can host up to 17,000 worshippers at any given time. This capacity reflects not only its significance as a religious site but also its role as a community hub.
Architecturally, the mosque exhibits a remarkable fusion of Ottoman and Malay styles. This design choice imbues the structure with a sense of grandeur and historical resonance. Particularly, the mosque draws heavy influence from the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, one of the most famous mosques worldwide known for its stunning architecture.
A notable feature of the Federal Territory Mosque is its 22 domes, which are constructed from an innovative composite material. This material combines glass fibre fabric with epoxy resin, resulting in domes that are both durable and light. This choice of materials reflects a blend of traditional architectural aesthetics with modern technological advancements, showcasing the mosque as a symbol of both heritage and progress.
