First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church, Newark

First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church, Newark

The First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church is a distinguished historical site located at the intersection of Broad Street and Central Avenue, near Military Park, in Newark. This church holds a prominent urban position and enhances the cityscape, offering picturesque views to both pedestrians and drivers.

The church was first established on June 6, 1801, by a congregation eager to create a dedicated place of worship in Newark. It has borne witness to significant milestones in the city's history, including Newark's incorporation as a city in 1836, the establishment of notable institutions like Beth Israel Hospital and the Newark Museum, and the turbulent 1967 riots. Throughout these events, the church has remained a steadfast community cornerstone.

Completed in 1890, the current building was designed by Newark's own William Halsey Wood and financed by local industrialist and former mayor Thomas B. Peddie. Its architecture boasts a circular auditorium under a large dome, evoking historic sites like the Pantheon in Rome. The church, made from rough-hewn brown granite, features two front towers and a side tower but omits the traditional temple front common in many churches. Entry is through polished granite columns with Moorish or Byzantine-inspired capitals, leading to an interior with round pews and a theatrical balcony and altar setup accommodating up to 1000 people. The interior combines stone, wood, metalwork, and Tiffany glass, creating a stunning visual effect.

In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This designation underscores its importance in the architectural and cultural fabric of Newark and its ongoing role as a historical and spiritual landmark in the city.
