First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro

First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro

Located at the edge of Greensboro’s Fisher Park Historic District, First Presbyterian Church stands as a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture and a cornerstone of the city’s spiritual life since 1824. As the first chartered Presbyterian church in Greensboro, its early congregation included both free citizens and enslaved individuals-four of its twelve founding members were enslaved, and by the Civil War, the church counted more than thirty enslaved members. After emancipation, 37 former members founded what would become Saint James Presbyterian Church, a vital spiritual community still active today.

Over nearly two centuries, First Presbyterian has worshipped in four different buildings. Its third home, a Romanesque Revival structure at Church Street and Summit Avenue, now serves as the Greensboro History Museum. In 1929, the congregation moved into its current cathedral-like building, designed by architect Hobart Upjohn and inspired by the Cathedral of Albi in France. The brick structure features soaring spires, pointed arches, and a dazzling rose window that continues to awe visitors and parishioners alike.

Today, with approximately 2,700 members, First Presbyterian Church is an active congregation committed to spiritual growth, social justice, and community outreach. Through worship services, education, mission work, and inclusive ministries, the church invites all to explore faith and service in a welcoming environment rooted in tradition and renewal.
