Holy Trinity Church, Greensboro
Located in Greensboro’s Fisher Park Historic District, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is a vibrant spiritual home with deep roots and a forward-looking mission. With over 2,000 parishioners today, Holy Trinity stands as a center of Episcopal life and community service in the city.
The church’s origins date back to 1869, when lay members gathered to form Saint Barnabas, Greensboro’s first Episcopal parish. The church building was completed in 1871 at what is now the site of Elon University’s law school. In 1891, a group broke away to form Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Mission, which gained parish status two years later. The two churches merged in 1910 to form Holy Trinity Episcopal Church-only to part again, resulting in two congregations that continue to flourish today.
In 1919, Holy Trinity purchased its current property at Greene Street and Fisher Avenue. Noted architect Hobart Upjohn designed a parish house there, with its assembly hall later transformed into All Saints Chapel in 1930. After World War II, the congregation raised funds to build a new sanctuary, where the first service was held on Easter Sunday, 1950. Continued growth led to further expansions in the 1960s, 1990s, and 2010s, including the addition of a columbarium, chapel renovations, and enhanced facilities.
Holy Trinity remains active and inclusive, offering diverse worship services, adult and youth formation programs, community events, a music school, and spiritual pilgrimages. The church’s longstanding commitment to pastoral care, social outreach, and education affirms its central role in Greensboro’s spiritual and civic life.
