Museum of First Romanian School, Brasov

Museum of First Romanian School, Brasov (must see)

The Museum of the First Romanian School is a place that honors education in Romania. The school dates to 1495 and remained used as a school for almost 400 years. It was converted into a museum in 1964.

The museum holds more than 6,000 early Slavic and Romanian books. One of these is the first Romanian Bible, printed on goat skin. The museum also has the first Romanian printing press, used to make the first Romanian Bible and the first Romanian schoolbook.

The school is on the grounds of St. Nicholas Church. It was located in an area that was still occupied by Hungary. Romanian classes began in 1583. Each village in Transylvania paid for one child to attend the school. There were about 110 students taught at any given time.

Those who wish to spend time at the museum must be part of a group of 10 or more. Those who have smaller group sizes can still enjoy the museum as long as they make an appointment in advance.
