First Unitarian Church, Ann Arbor

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Ann Arbor (UUAA) has roots dating back to 1865, when the First Unitarian Society was formed. In 1881–82, the congregation built a permanent home in downtown Ann Arbor-a distinctive Richardsonian Romanesque building constructed of ashlar stone and accented with darker bands. Its design includes a cross-gabled roof, arched windows, and a large corner tower with four turrets. Though the congregation eventually moved to a modern facility on Ann Arbor–Saline Road, the original church building remains a recognized local landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The structure was significantly renovated in 1885 by Hobbs & Black, a local architecture firm that helped preserve its signature Romanesque details. Visitors today can still admire the building’s heavy stone construction, elegant porticos, and dramatic tower, which reflect the architectural trends of late 19th-century civic and religious buildings. Its location near downtown makes it a convenient stop for those interested in historic architecture or local religious history.

The current UUAA congregation now meets in a larger, contemporary campus that supports a community of more than 600 members. Weekly services emphasize inclusivity and often combine music, poetry, and spoken reflection. Their music program is especially active, ranging from traditional choir performances to jazz, folk, and youth ensembles, drawing attention from both residents and out-of-town visitors.

While the historic building is no longer the congregation's main site, it occasionally hosts events and remains a symbol of UUAA’s long-standing presence in the city. Travelers interested in architecture, community values, or cultural programming may find a visit both engaging and reflective.
