Freie Strasse (Freie Street), Basel

Running through the heart of Basel’s Old Town, Freie Street is the city’s oldest and best-known shopping street. Its history stretches back almost 2,000 years, when a Roman road followed approximately the same route, connecting the settlement around Basel with Augusta Raurica and important routes farther west.

The street remained an important commercial artery during the Middle Ages. Its name is first documented in 1241 as libera strata, meaning “free street” or “public street”. According to one interpretation, merchants enjoyed certain exemptions or privileges when transporting goods along the route, although the precise origin of the name remains uncertain.

Trade flourished following the construction of Middle Bridge in the 13th century, and numerous guilds established prestigious headquarters nearby. Between 1376 and 1378, a large trading hall was established here, strengthening the street’s importance as a commercial centre.

Freie Street changed dramatically during the 19th century, when older buildings were demolished and the narrow medieval thoroughfare was widened. Elegant commercial buildings with large shop windows gradually transformed it into the fashionable shopping street seen today.

Now largely pedestrianised, Freie Street is lined with fashion boutiques, international retailers, luxury jewellers and Swiss watch shops, alongside cafés and restaurants. As you walk along its attractive paving, look beyond the modern storefronts to appreciate the mixture of historic and more recent architecture lining the route. During the Christmas season, elaborate festive lights add another attraction to a street that has been associated with commerce for centuries.
