Müensterplatz (Minster Square), Basel

Minster Square is one of Basel’s oldest and most atmospheric squares, dominated by the magnificent Basel Minster. In addition to the cathedral, numerous restored medieval and early modern buildings line the historic square.

The area around Minster Square has been settled for millennia. The Rauraci, a Celtic tribe, inhabited the region during the Iron Age, and remains of ancient fortifications can still be seen near the corner of Minster Square and Knights’ Street.

Minster Square developed gradually over several centuries, with much of its traditional paving dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. During the upheavals of 1798, when the old political order in Basel collapsed amid the establishment of the Helvetic Republic, citizens gathered here to erect a liberty tree, a symbol inspired by the French Revolution.

Throughout history, the square has played an important part in the city’s public life. Basel’s famous Carnival has roots stretching back centuries, and during the festivities, its enormous painted lanterns are displayed in Minster Square.

Designed by architect Paolo Antonio Pisoni, the Pisoni Fountain was put into service in 1785. Located in the south-western corner of the square, the fountain seen today is a faithful 1937 replica, created to preserve the appearance of the 18th-century original.

Minster Square also has several connections with prominent cultural figures. Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche taught at the nearby secondary school while serving as a professor in Basel. The square is also home to the Paul Sacher Foundation, internationally renowned for its extensive collection of original musical manuscripts.
