Galerie Colbert (Colbert Gallery), Paris

Galerie Colbert was erected in 1823 as a rival to its illustrious counterpart, Galerie Vivienne, but did not bask in the same triumph and soon after fell into abandonment. In the 1980s, the National Library came to its rescue and saved it from utter oblivion. Now, the passage is not home to mere boutiques, but to the esteemed Institut Nationale d’Histoire de l’Art (National Institute of Art History) and the Institut National du Patrimoine (heritage). Its architectural pièce de résistance is the rotunda, crowned with a glass dome and graced by a statue of Eurydice in the throes of a venomous serpent.

Stroll through the classical-themed gallery, adorned with faux beams and featuring a striking portrait painting of Colbert, who served as Minister of Finances from 1661 to 1683 under Louis XIV. Marvel at university lectures that take place within its hallowed walls.

Towards the other end, one can enter the world-renowned Art Nouveau brasserie, "Le Grand Colbert" (open daily from noon to midnight), whose majestic historic décor and inimitable atmosphere made it a popular filming location for French and international films, including "Something's Gotta Give". Should you wish to dine here, it is best to reserve in advance and set aside ample time to fully savor the ambiance without the hurriedness that might detract from the experience of indulging in towering seafood platters.
