Garden of Remembrance, Dublin

Take a glimpse into the beautifully laid out Garden of Remembrance, unveiled in 1966 to honor the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising and dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives for Irish freedom. Nestled in the heart of the city, this oasis offers a serene escape enhanced by eye-catching craftsmanship.

The garden's central feature is a sunken pool shaped like a Latin cross, encircled by benches and vibrant flowers in wooden planters. The pool's tiled floor showcases four mosaic designs along its vertical axis, representing the Celtic tradition of offering peace by casting shields and weapons into water after battle. At the pool's highest point, a gentle staircase leads to Oisin Kelly's sculpture depicting the myth of the Children of Lir, symbolizing renewal and rebirth in Celtic lore. Surrounding the sculpture and pool are neatly maintained green lawns.

Tip:
Although there are no public restrooms, you can pop into the Dublin City Gallery's Hugh Lane across the street if it's open. The gallery itself usually hosts temporary exhibitions of more modern artworks.
