The Great Plains Zoo, spanning 45 acres in Sioux Falls, offers an engaging wildlife experience with over 1,000 animals representing diverse species from around the world. The zoo is operated through a partnership between the City of Sioux Falls and the Zoological Society of Sioux Falls, with the city managing the infrastructure and grounds, while the non-profit Zoological Society oversees animal care and exhibits.

The Rare Rhinos of Africa and Asian Cat exhibits are also popular attractions. Seasonal events and daily activities enhance the visitor experience, from feeding giraffes to participating in "After Dark Adventures."

The Great Plains Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and was honored with the "Quarter Century Award" in 2016 for maintaining continuous accreditation for 25 years. The zoo remains open year-round, adapting its programming to the seasons to ensure engaging experiences for guests at any time of year. The Maasai Market Café provides casual dining options, while guided tours in golf carts allow for a more immersive look into the animal habitats.

As part of its ongoing development, the zoo has been working on a master plan that includes new lion, meerkat, and leopard exhibits in the African Savannah area, along with a renovation of the Roar Café to expand seating and provide climate-controlled views of the animal enclosures. Additionally, plans are in place for the renovation of the Black Bear exhibit to enhance infrastructure and improve visitor experiences.

With its dedication to conservation, education, and an up-close look at wildlife, the Great Plains Zoo continues to be a premier attraction in Sioux Falls, offering a unique and interactive way to connect with the natural world.
