Gurminj Museum of Musical Instruments, Dushanbe

Gurminj Museum of Musical Instruments, Dushanbe (must see)

Gurminj Museum of Musical Instruments is a small, family-run museum focused on traditional music from Central Asia. It was set up in the early 1990s by the family of Gurminj Zavqibekov, a well-known actor and musician from the Pamir region. The museum was created at a time when many traditional art forms were disappearing, and its goal is to protect this musical heritage and keep it alive for future generations.

The collection holds more than 100 musical instruments from Tajikistan and nearby regions, including Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and the Pamirs. It features string instruments such as the tanbur and rubab, bowed instruments like the ghijak, as well as drums and flutes. Most are handmade from materials like wood and leather, with forms and decoration linked to local culture. Clear labels explain their origins and use, making the display easy to follow.

The museum is located inside a traditional house, which gives it a relaxed and personal feel. Instead of large exhibition halls, the instruments are displayed in rooms that look like living spaces. This helps visitors picture how music was part of everyday life, family events, and local celebrations. Old photographs and personal items add context and help explain the role of musicians in different communities.

Music is not only displayed but often played. Family members or visiting musicians sometimes give short live performances or demonstrations. Hearing the instruments played in person helps visitors understand their sound and purpose, and shows how music continues to connect people across different regions and traditions.
