Harnham Bridge, Salisbury

Harnham Bridge is a medieval stone bridge that has carried travellers across the River Avon since the 13th century. Built under the direction of Bishop Robert Bingham around 1244, it formed part of a new southern approach to the cathedral city, helping divert trade away from Old Sarum and contributing to the growth of the new settlement. Today, this Grade I listed bridge remains a rare surviving medieval river crossing.

The bridge crosses two river channels and meets on an island once home to Bishop Bingham’s chapel. Two resident chaplains lived there, praying for travellers and collecting bridge tolls that helped fund repairs and upkeep. Chapel remains survive within a private house, while nearby Harnham Gate dates from Edward III’s 1327 licence to fortify the Cathedral Close. Beneath the arches, oak piles still support the bridge on marshy ground.

The bridge is also closely linked with the painter John Constable, who stayed nearby during the early 1820s. He frequently crossed Harnham Bridge and captured its surroundings in works including Harnham Gate, Salisbury (1821), preserving the historic crossing and its riverside landscape on canvas. Visitors can still see river, meadow, and cathedral views much like those Constable knew.
