Harnham Gate, Salisbury

Harnham Gate is a medieval gateway forming part of the historic entrance to the Cathedral Close. Built in the early 14th century, it was added after King Edward III granted permission in 1327 to strengthen the close with defensive walls. It marked the boundary of the Liberty of the Close, where access could be controlled and tolls collected from travellers crossing from the bridge.

Constructed from local stone, the gateway has pointed arches and sturdy masonry typical of medieval defensive work. It is the smallest of the surviving gates around the Close, but it still preserves a strong sense of its original purpose. Its heavy wooden doors, studded and bound with iron, are among its most distinctive surviving features.

The gate stands beside medieval Harnham Bridge, linking transport, defence, and cathedral life in one historic approach. In 1821, John Constable painted Harnham Gate, Salisbury, showing the gateway, nearby cottage, and cathedral spire beyond. Visitors can still enjoy views across the River Avon and water meadows from this long-used route.
