Rose and Crown Hotel, Salisbury

The Rose and Crown Hotel is a traditional 13th-century coaching inn with a long history of welcoming travellers. Its success grew after the nearby Ayleswade Bridge, built in 1244, redirected trade and traffic across the River Avon, making the inn an important stopping place for merchants and visitors. The oldest sections retain exposed oak beams and historic fireplaces, while later additions include modern guest rooms in the Garden Wing.

The hotel's Rivers Edge Waterfront Restaurant, Bar, and Terrace serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea. In the historic Oak Bar, centuries-old timber framing and a log fire preserve the atmosphere of the medieval inn. Guests can relax in the riverside garden overlooking the River Avon. Parking is available for an extra fee, and the building’s varied layout reflects centuries of expansion.

The hotel stands beside the medieval Ayleswade Bridge and provides easy access to riverside walks through the Harnham Water Meadows and towards the cathedral. The surrounding landscape inspired painter John Constable, who studied the views here while preparing Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows (1831). Today, visitors can still enjoy many of the same riverside scenes that influenced one of his best-known landscapes.
