Hayne's Cave Battery, Gibraltar

Hayne's Cave Battery, Gibraltar

Tucked neatly into a natural cave, the Hayne's Cave Battery was established during the aftermath of the Great Siege of Gibraltar from 1779-1783. The battery dates from 1788, constructed under the direction of Captain Haynes, who was serving as Garrison Quartermaster at the time and also played a role in building Queen’s Road.

By the early 20th century, specifically in 1904, the battery was equipped with two 4‑inch Quick-Firing gun positions, spaced roughly 40 metres apart. Although a plaque on the site bears the date 1903, this likely refers to when this armament was placed rather than its original construction. The battery’s defensive role was relatively short-lived; by 1911, it was decommissioned in favor of the more powerful 6-inch guns at nearby Tovey Battery.

Today, Hayne’s Cave Battery stands as a derelict yet evocative piece of Gibraltar’s military past. It can be reached via a walk along the scenic Royal Anglian Way, which winds past other military installations and support buildings before reaching this vantage point. The cave interior was later adapted to serve as a housing space for water tanks and pumps, yet it continues to draw visitors as a point of interest.
