Henry Fawcett Statue, Salisbury

Henry Fawcett Statue honours one of Britain’s leading Victorian economists, politicians, and social reformers. Unveiled in 1887, the life-size bronze monument commemorates Henry Fawcett, who was born nearby in 1833. Blinded at 25, he later became a Cambridge professor, MP for Brighton and Hackney, and Postmaster General.

Sculpted by Henry Richard Hope-Pinker, the statue shows Fawcett in academic robes and faces the house where he was born. The granite pedestal carries inscriptions celebrating his work for education, postal reform, and equal opportunity. A Salisbury Civic Society Blue Plaque also presents his achievements in Braille, an apt detail for a monument to a public figure who lived with blindness.

Fawcett introduced major postal reforms, including the parcel post service, wider postal savings, and better employment opportunities for women in the Post Office. Today, the monument gives visitors a clear link between local history and national reform, while its setting makes it easy to pause and consider the life of a man who turned personal adversity into public service.
