John a' Port's House & William Russel’s House, Salisbury

John a' Port's House and William Russel’s House are two adjoining medieval buildings that reflect the prosperity of Salisbury’s merchants over several centuries. William Russel’s House dates from about 1306, while John a' Port's House was built around 1425. Each was built for a wealthy merchant and reflects medieval urban housing. John a' Port's House is Grade II* listed, while William Russel’s House is Grade II listed.

John a' Port's House is associated with John a' Port, a prominent cloth merchant who served as Mayor of Salisbury six times. William Russel’s House also belonged to a wool merchant, and its position near the medieval wool market helped connect the buildings to local trade. Both houses retain medieval timberwork, fireplaces, wattle and daub, panelling, and an internal link. William Russel’s House hides its older frame behind an 18th-century brick front.

Over the centuries, the houses have served as private homes, shops, and offices, remaining part of local commercial life. John a' Port's House later supported a charity for Trinity Hospital and local parishes.
