Edwin Young Gallery, Salisbury

The Edwin Young Gallery is a public art gallery named after Victorian watercolour artist Edwin Young, who was largely self-taught and had no formal artistic training. Although he is best known for watercolours, he first worked in oils and exhibited locally in the 1860s. His later gift of paintings and funds helped create a permanent collection, which now includes paintings, prints, sculpture, photographs, and archives.

Young’s careful views of local buildings, landscapes, and everyday scenes provide a useful visual record of the area before many modern changes. The collection also includes works by artists such as Edgar Barclay, whose romantic Victorian paintings of Stonehenge reflect his deep interest in the monument. Other holdings include prints and works connected with British artists from different periods, along with temporary exhibitions and newer acquisitions.

The gallery also preserves the archive of crime writer John Creasey, who published more than 600 books under 28 pen names. His archive includes manuscripts, first editions, translated thrillers, memorabilia, and walking sticks. The gallery also preserves its 1913 origins and supports new student art.
