Historical Army Museum, Rio de Janeiro
The Historical Army Museum can be found within the Copacabana Fort, a massive structure constructed in 1914, just before World War I. This fort played a crucial role in defending Rio against potential attacks. Many of its original features remain intact, including the Krupp cannons designed to fire shells up to 23 kilometers (about 14 miles) out to sea.
The Army Historical Museum is one of the country's prominent military museums, with its origins tracing back to the 19th century. Over time, it changed locations in the city, underwent periods of extinction and revival, until finally settling in the renowned and historic Copacabana Fort in 1987.
The mission of the Historical Museum of the Army and Copacabana Fort is to preserve, protect, and share the values, traditions, and historical legacy of the Brazilian Army. It serves as a cultural space, offering culture, entertainment, and knowledge to visitors. The museum's halls, including the Cologne-Empire, Republic, and Temporary Exhibitions, provide insights into significant moments in our military history on land.
With an extensive collection of around fifteen thousand items in its Technical Reserve, the museum houses clothing, weapons, and rare personal belongings of historical military figures. For example, it even features a lock of hair from Napoleon Bonaparte, which is displayed in temporary exhibitions.
