Holy Trinity Statue, Pecs

The Holy Trinity Statue in Pecs dominates Szechenyi Square, standing as a baroque tribute to the resilience of the city. Originally erected in 1714 to commemorate the end of a devastating plague, the monument was inspired by Emperor Leopold I’s initiative to honor the victims of past epidemics. Over time, the original statue fell into decay, leading to its eventual replacement. The current version, sculpted by Gyorgy Kiss, was unveiled in 1908-marking the third iteration of the monument on this historic site.

At its ornate base, figures of the Holy Father and Son rest amid sculpted clouds, while at the summit, the Holy Spirit, represented by a dove, radiates golden light. Along the column’s ledge, statues of Saint Roch, Saint Sebastian, and Saint Rosalie-all revered as plague protectors-stand in solemn watch. This arrangement reinforces the statue’s role as a symbol of faith, gratitude, and remembrance.
