Szerecsen Pharmacy Museum, Pecs

The Szerecsen Pharmacy Museum in Pecs is a journey into the city’s pharmaceutical past, housed in what was once the oldest pharmacy in town. While its legal predecessor dates back to 1697, the current Neo-Rococo interior comes from 1897, when Istvan Sipocz established his pharmacy on the ground floor of the Slauch House.

The museum’s facade is unmistakable, with statues of Saracens guarding the entrance-a nod to the pharmacy’s name, which means “Moor” in Hungarian. Inside, visitors are greeted by an elegant oak interior, adorned with Zsolnay ceramic inlays, showcasing the craftsmanship of the famed Hungarian manufacturer. At the heart of the former pharmacy stands a fountain, crowned with another Saracen statue.

The main exhibition is a treasure trove of historical pharmaceutical artifacts, tracing the medical history of Baranya County. Expect to see medicine dispensing vials, wooden and metal pharmacy vessels, and ornate ceramic containers, each telling a story of past healing practices. Two dedicated museum rooms expand on this theme, displaying an extensive collection of old tools, documents, and equipment used in the region’s apothecaries.
