Statue of Hunyadi Janos, Pecs

Statue of Hunyadi Janos, Pecs

The Statue of Hunyadi Janos was erected in 1956 to commemorate the valorous legacy of Nandorfehervar and the 500th anniversary of the renowned hero's demise. John Hunyadi, also known as "The White Knight," is revered as a national icon in Hungary for his distinguished military and political contributions during the fifteenth century.

Renowned for his stalwart defense of the Kingdom of Hungary against Ottoman incursions from 1441 until his passing, Hunyadi's prowess on the battlefield remains a source of national pride. The statue's placement in the southeastern part of the square, despite initial intentions to position it at the Holy Trinity site, was a strategic decision by the artist, Patzay, who asserted that a side view of a horseman statue would be more visually impactful. This foresight proved prescient, as the sculpture's positioning allows for visibility from all directions, serving as a poignant tribute to Hunyadi's enduring legacy.
