Iglesia de San Diego de Alcalá (Church of Saint Didacus of Alcalá), Guadalajara
The Church of Saint Didacus of Alcalá dates back to 1619, when a small chapel and school were founded by the bishop and the Dieguinos for underprivileged girls. The stone edifice that stands today was built in 1702 in a graceful Neoclassical style.
The church's exterior is understated yet elegant, featuring a simple façade and sturdy stone walls that reflect its period architecture. Inside, the preserved stonework shines alongside Corinthian arches, ribbed vaulted ceilings, and four classical side altars.
Over time, the church endured secularization and was closed during early 20th-century anti-clerical reforms, only to be reclaimed by the Catholic Church in the 1960s. Today, it remains an active parish, beloved for its intimate setting, heritage weddings, and traditional masses.
