Igreja de Santa Maria do Espinheiro (Church of Our Lady of Espinheiro), Evora

The Church of Our Lady of Espinheiro, a magnificent testament to centuries of architectural evolution and historical significance, stands as a striking example of Portugal's rich heritage. Founded in the 15th century and situated within the Order of St. Jerome (São Jerónimo), this church has undergone numerous transformations that reflect various architectural styles, including Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Approaching the church, visitors are welcomed by a grand vaulted courtyard featuring an exterior gallery that embodies the Renaissance style. The entrance is graced by a Renaissance-style portal, offering a glimpse into the splendor that lies within. The church's design features a single, expansive nave that takes on the form of a Latin cross plan. The elevations of the church are adorned with meticulously placed ashlar blocks of historic tiles, speaking to the intricate craftsmanship of the past.

While much of the Gothic architecture has given way to subsequent styles, traces of its influence can still be observed in the remaining transept apses. The chancel, reconstructed in the 16th century, showcases the artistry of that era. A particularly remarkable aspect of the church is the chapel built in the 17th century, dedicated to the Counts of Basto. Adorned with lavish marble mausoleums, this chapel is a symphony of artistry and devotion. The walls are covered in tile panels, attributed to Gabriel del Barco, which depict scenes from the lives of St. Jerónimo and the Virgin.

Another notable feature is the chapel of Senhor Morto, housing the tomb of the doctoral canon André de Sande. Here, an altar made of intricately embroidered marble commands attention. The chapel is further enhanced by a Florentine-style altarpiece, enriched with inlaid mosaics and panels of Dutch-inspired figurative monochromatic tiles from 1710.
