Roman Catholic Cemetery, Agra

Roman Catholic Cemetery, Agra

The Roman Catholic Cemetery holds a significant historical legacy, tracing back to the era of European settlement during the Mughal reign. Despite the urban sprawl surrounding it, this burial ground retains an air of serenity, preserving the memory of those laid to rest within its confines. Dating back to 1550, it served as the resting place for Armenian Christians before welcoming individuals from various Christian denominations.

The cemetery's gravestones, some dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, offer glimpses into the lives of European adventurers, soldiers, and artisans who found their final repose here. Notable among these are the resting places of British adventurer John Mildenhall, Italian architect Jerome Veronio, and lapidary Hortenzio Bronzoni. However, it's the unassuming yet striking tomb of British Colonel John Hessing, also known as the Red Taj Mahal, that distinguishes itself amidst the array of graves within the cemetery.

Situated on the eastern side of Mahatma Gandhi Road, near the Agra Civil Court, this relatively compact graveyard is enclosed by a protective wall. Colonel Hessing's tomb, resembling a miniature Taj Mahal, stands as a testament to the familial tribute to his memory. While lacking opulent embellishments, its red sandstone facade adorned with floral motifs carries a poignant simplicity.
