Indiana State Library and Historical Building, Indianapolis

The Indiana State Library and Historical Bureau, located in downtown Indianapolis, is Indiana's largest public library and a cornerstone of the state's cultural and historical preservation efforts. Established in 1934, the library boasts an impressive collection of over 60,000 manuscripts and countless books covering diverse topics.

The Indiana State Library, the state's oldest government agency, traces its roots to territorial days. Established in Indianapolis on February 11, 1825, with the Secretary of State as its first librarian, it evolved from serving state employees to becoming a public resource. Key milestones include its 1841 establishment as an independent entity and the 1867 transfer of legal volumes to the Supreme Court Law Library.

In the early 20th century, the library expanded significantly, culminating in a dedicated building completed in 1934. Designed by Pierre & Wright Architects and funded by a 1929 tax, it features Indiana limestone, sandstone, and sculptures by Leon Hermant and Adolph Wolter. Inside, brass accents, woodcarvings, walnut paneling, murals, and stained glass create a stunning interior.

The library’s holdings include 60,000 books and pamphlets, 3,500 collected manuscripts, 1.5 million images, and 1,000 maps, reflecting the rich history of Indiana and the Old Northwest. Divided into seven main divisions, the library caters to diverse interests. Additionally, the Martha E. Wright Conservation Lab focuses on the restoration and preservation of historic documents using specialized equipment.

The Indiana Historical Bureau, housed within the library, was originally founded in 1915 as the Indiana Historical Commission. It plays a vital role in promoting Indiana's heritage through historical markers, educational initiatives, and a gift shop. Its efforts began with preparations for the state’s centennial and have since expanded to cover a wide range of historical preservation activities.

Recognized for its historical and architectural significance, the Indiana State Library and Historical Bureau was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. The institution continues to serve as a beacon of knowledge and a guardian of Indiana's history, fostering public engagement and scholarship in a magnificent setting.
