One America Tower, Indianapolis
The OneAmerica Tower, previously known as the AUL Tower, is a 38-story skyscraper located in downtown Indianapolis. Completed in 1982, the building served as the tallest in Indiana until 1990, when the Salesforce Tower surpassed it. Today, it holds the title of the second-tallest structure in both Indianapolis and the state of Indiana. Designed by the acclaimed architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the tower reflects a blend of modern design and Indiana tradition, with its facade crafted from locally sourced limestone.
The building's unique architectural layout features an elongated hexagonal core, flanked by two stair-stepped wings of eight stories each. Its southeastern entrance boasts a three-story atrium with luxurious materials, including Brazilian granite flooring and Italian marble walls. The initial design also prioritized public interaction, incorporating a landscaped interior courtyard and an adjacent cafeteria, creating a welcoming space beyond standard office use.
Though the OneAmerica Tower lacks an observation deck, "The Skyline Club," a private restaurant on the 36th floor, offers stunning views of Indianapolis. Public access to the rest of the building is limited due to security measures like electronic turnstiles.
A staple of the building’s legacy is its annual “Bop to the Top” event, formerly the "AUL Stairclimb," which has taken place since 1984. This charity fundraiser challenges participants to ascend 790 steps (or 500 feet) to raise money for local causes.
Situated on a prominent square, the OneAmerica Tower has faced criticism for its impact on Indiana Avenue but remains an iconic part of Indianapolis' skyline. Blending innovation, efficiency, and historical significance, it houses OneAmerica Financial Partners, which became a mutual insurance holding company in 2000.
