Institut de Physiologie (Institute of Physiology), Brussels

The former Institute of Physiology, now serving as the main building of Émile Jacqmain School in Parc Léopold, gained fame for hosting the fifth Solvay International Council in October 1927, with the theme "Electrons and Photons", which primarily focused on quantum mechanics. Remarkably, out of the twenty-nine attendees at this congress, more than half, seventeen in total, would later receive Nobel Prizes.

During this significant event, there were intense exchanges between representatives of the "Copenhagen school" (Bohr, Heisenberg, Ehrenfest), who supported a probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics, and other prominent physicists (Einstein, Schrödinger, de Broglie, among others) who favored a deterministic approach. This marked the beginning of a prolonged controversy known as the Bohr-Einstein debates, which lasted for approximately two decades.

The building itself is notable for its eclectic-style architecture and its innovative double-glazed windows, a creation of engineer Léon Gérard, consisting of an outer glass wall and an inner glass wall separated by approximately 14 cm of air. A significant restoration campaign, carried out from 2007 to 2011, successfully restored the facades of the building to a state more closely resembling their original condition, preserving the structure's historical and architectural significance.
