J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines, San Jose
Founded in 1971 by Jerry Lohr, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines is a family-owned winery headquartered in San Jose, with additional winemaking facilities in Paso Robles. The company manages over 3,700 acres of estate vineyards across Paso Robles, Monterey County, and the Napa Valley, producing a wide portfolio of wines known for quality, consistency, and sustainability.
The J. Lohr wine collection is divided into four signature tiers: J. Lohr Estates, Vineyard Series, Cuvée Series, and Gesture, complemented by additional brands such as Cypress Vineyards, Painter Bridge, and ARIEL Vineyards (offering non-alcoholic options). Winemaking operations are led by Jeff Meier, who has been with the company since 1984 and now serves as Director of Winemaking.
With annual U.S. sales topping 1 million cases, J. Lohr ranks among the top 30 wine producers in the country. In recognition of its commitment to excellence, the company was named American Winery of the Year in 2010 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine-not just for its wine, but for leadership in education, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility.
J. Lohr is a Certified California Sustainable Winegrower and operates the largest solar tracking array in the American wine industry at its Paso Robles Wine Center. Sustainability practices also include energy and water conservation, eco-friendly packaging, and the protection of vineyard biodiversity.
Since 2009, J. Lohr has supported the National Breast Cancer Foundation through the sale of Carol’s Vineyard wines-a Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc from their vineyard in Saint Helena, named in memory of Jerry Lohr’s wife, Carol Waldorf Lohr, who passed away from breast cancer in 2008.
Whether you’re visiting the San Jose tasting room or exploring their award-winning varietals, J. Lohr remains a pillar of California winemaking with deep roots in family, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
