Jezuitska Kolej (Jesuit College), Cesky Krumlov

Th Jesuit College is a historic Renaissance building with an interesting story behind. The Jesuits, a Catholic religious order, were invited to Český Krumlov by Vilém from Rožmberk, the then owner of the estate. In 1586, Vilém from Rožmberk initiated the establishment of the Jesuit college, which was constructed on the site of six pre-existing bourgeois houses. The primary objective of the college was to promote Catholicism and provide religious education in response to the growing Protestant influence in the area.

The construction of the college dormitory commenced in 1586 and was completed by 1588. This Renaissance building is an architectural gem and reflects the grandeur of the era. The college complex also included a prelature building, directly connected to the nearby parish church of St. Vitus, which the Jesuits used for their religious activities. Additionally, a smaller chapel dedicated to the Mother of God was available within the college premises.

The Jesuits occupied the building and utilized it for their educational and religious purposes until 1773. Subsequently, the building had various uses, including serving military needs. However, in 1887, due to an incident involving the city council, the local garrison was disbanded.

In 1889, the historic building underwent a transformation when it became the Hotel Růže, which still operates in the same location today. A pivotal moment in the history of Český Krumlov occurred at the Hotel Růže on November 3, 1918. On this day, the Czech National Committee was established at the hotel. This committee played a vital role in promoting Czech culture and national identity in the city.
