Johannes Honterus Statue, Brasov

Johannes Honterus Statue, Brasov

The Johannes Honterus Statue stands as a tribute to one of Transylvania’s most influential figures, located in the courtyard of Brasov's iconic Black Church, near its southern façade. This bronze monument, unveiled on August 21, 1898, is the work of Berlin sculptor Harro Magnussen and has been listed as a historical monument since 2004.

Honterus (1498–1549), a true Renaissance man, was a Transylvanian Saxon humanist, reformer, and educator who transformed Brasov’s cultural and religious life. The statue, 2.5 meters high, depicts Honterus with a book in his left hand-a nod to his scholarly achievements-and his right hand outstretched, pointing towards the German school, symbolizing his efforts in educational reform. The book bears the titles of two of his most impactful works, Reformation Booklet (Reformationsbüchlein) and School Regulations (Schulordnung), highlighting his role in spreading Lutheran ideals and restructuring education.

Magnussen’s design draws inspiration from a 1550 woodcut of Honterus, portraying him with a characteristic stern expression, distinctive beard, and traditional pastoral hat. The plinth features two bronze bas-reliefs, further emphasizing the legacy of this remarkable figure.

Born the son of a furrier in 1498, Honterus became Brasov’s most celebrated citizen. He authored the first map of Transylvania, founded the city’s first printing press, and established its first higher education institution and paper mill. His reforms significantly shaped the Saxon church and Transylvanian society. Today, his remains lie in the Black Church, not far from the statue that immortalizes his contributions to history and humanity.
