Juliusz Slowacki Theater, Krakow

Juliusz Slowacki Theater, Krakow

If you happen to travel to Krakow via train, one of the first landmarks that will greet you upon leaving the station is the Juliusz Slowacki Theater. From its inception, the decision to build this theater was met with controversy. Not only was it chosen over the option of improving the sewage system, but it also required the demolition of the Church belonging to the Order of the Holy Ghost.

Throughout its construction, the theater building received preferential treatment and eventually became the inaugural structure in Krakow to be illuminated by electric lights. When the theater officially opened its doors in 1893, it achieved tremendous success, showcasing the cultural opulence of the country. By 1909, it was named in honor of Juliusz Slowacki, the Polish poet and playwright. However, the theater faced challenges, enduring economic hardships and succumbing to the Nazi invasion. Under Nazi occupation, a German troupe performed within its walls.

The post-war era witnessed a resurgence of Polish artistic prowess, leading to the revival of the Slowacki Theater's grandeur and Polish theatrical excellence. Today, the theater remains a crucible for innovative ideas while preserving traditional values through its genuinely Polish-themed presentations. Even for those not particularly inclined towards theaters, a visit to the Slowacki is worthwhile, if only to catch a glimpse of the century-old oil painting depicting the allegorical interplay between Tragedy and Comedy. This historic painting still serves as the stage curtain to this day.

Why You Should Visit:
The Baroque style is nice in every area of this building; an exquisite example of architecture inspired by the most beautiful theaters in Europe.

Tip:
A tour of the inside takes about 90 mins. You hear good stories and also have the chance to see the backstage.
