Kalkaji Mandir, Delhi

Kalkaji Mandir is one of the most popular tourist spots in Delhi. Located near the Okhla Industrial Estate and the Lotus temple, this Mandir is dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is one of the oldest temples in India. It is believed that the Pandavas and Kauravas worshipped Kali. The present building was constructed in 1764. Mirza Raja Kidar Nath, the Peshkar of Mughal Emperor Akbar II made some renovations in 1816. At present, the entire temple is made of white marble and black granite tiles.

Kalkaji Mandir stands on a hill and is thronged by hundreds of devotees every day. Goddess Kali is given a bath in pure milk and draped with a bright red sari. Aarti is performed in the evenings followed by hymn recitation. The temple is decorated during Navaratri. Poojas last for nine days. People sing devotional hymns and a huge fair is organized during Navaratri.

It is believed that the Goddess is very powerful and that she fulfills the desires of her devotees. You can buy Pooja items for archana from the vendors outside the temple. Archana and other rituals are performed by Pujaris in the Mandir. The temple is very bright and airy. The lights are kept burning through the night.
