Kansas Firefighters Museum, Wichita

Kansas Firefighters Museum, Wichita

Located in a charming 1909 firehouse, the Kansas Firefighters Museum invites visitors on an immersive journey through firefighting history. This restored Engine House No. 6-once the city’s last horse-drawn fire station-was decommissioned in 1953 and later saved from demolition by dedicated local volunteers. It reopened in 1994 and now earns recognition on both Kansas and National Registers of Historic Places.

Inside, you’ll find a display of memorabilia: antique helmets and uniforms, original logbooks and dispatch systems, and rare mode of muscle-power-driven steam engines alongside fully restored early 20th-century fire trucks .

Beyond the fire-fighting hardware, the museum includes an intimate Memorial Plaza honouring Kansas firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice, crowned by the poignant “Final Call” statue and inscribed with evocative names dating back to the late 19th century.

Visitors can try on firefighter gear, ring an old fire alarm, and walk through original bunk rooms and the stables that once housed the station’s horses. Volunteers are on hand to share stories and answer questions.
